In addition to relieving the owner or barn manager of the responsibility of providing needed medical services, transitioning your horse through a rehabilitative care center like Ross Haven Farm allows your horse to recover in a quiet, relaxing farm environment, while remaining under the supervision of a veterinary medical professional.

Following best practice in human health care, veterinarians recognize that discharging an equine patient from a medical facility at the earliest appropriate time may offer advantages in terms of enhanced outcomes, reduced complications, and reduced costs. Additionally, there are an increasing number of equine medical procedures which can be safely performed in a non-hospital environment.

Foaling & Breeding Services

Originally a Thoroughbred breeding farm, Ross Haven Farm has a long history of successfully breeding and caring for pregnant mares and their foals. Our foaling stalls are outfitted with Ring cameras for around-the-clock monitoring and are comfortably bedded with quality straw bedding. 
Services offered include:

  • Comprehensive pre-parturient healthcare and wellness
  • Perinatal video surveillance and milk calcium testing
  • Veterinarian-supervised foaling and post-parturient checks
  • Foal wellness program
  • Direct registration of births with MA Breeding Programs

Boarding Services

If you want your horse to reside in a relaxed, safe and well-managed environment with the added benefit of an on-site experienced and knowledgeable veterinary surgeon and staff, consider Ross Haven Farm for your short or long-term boarding needs. 

We offer stall or pasture board, with group or individual turnout options. Board rates vary based on the complexity of care required. Please schedule a consultation for an accurate estimate for your specific needs. 

Farrier Services

The old adage “no hoof, no horse” remains as true today as it was 100 years ago and animals recuperating from illness or injury often need specialized farriery to help them avoid the hoof-related complications that can arise from prolonged inactivity or excessive weight bearing (eg, laminitis).  Many patients also present for primary hoof-related ailments.

We will work closely with your preferred farrier or our own attending farrier, Eric John, to follow your veterinarian’s hoof care recommendations. Drawing on experience gained from many years of specializing in podiatry, Dr. Kirker-Head can also provide valuable hoof care recommendations for your horse.

Adjunct Therapies

We believe that your horse’s traditional veterinary care regimen can often be enhanced by the application of adjunct therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic or massage. We are pleased to arrange for your horse to be treated by one of our recommended providers, or to book an appointment with your preferred provider.

Emergency Referral

The closest major veterinary referral center, Tufts University's Hospital for Large Animals, lies only 35 minutes from Ross Haven Farm, and others can be accessed within 90 minutes.
​In the event that your horse develops an urgent care problem best treated at a referral center, communication with the facility can be promptly established, emergency aid can be rendered by Dr. Kirker-Head and his team on site, and your horse can be transported to the center without delay using Ross Haven Farm's own spacious and safe truck and horse trailer.

Quarantine Facilities

In addition to the main rehabilitation facilities, Ross Haven Farm also offers quarantine/isolation services. Whether your horse requires a healthy quarantine period before moving on to a new home, or is recuperating from an infectious or contagious illness, we can accommodate the unique needs of most quarantined horses.
